The basic idea of a car seems pretty simple – turn wheels to pull you down the road. But, as illustrated by the hundreds of individual parts, it actually takes a lot of machinery to make a car.
According to Worldometers, there are about 600 million passenger cars running worldwide (approximately one car per eleven people). Around the world, there were around 806 million cars and light trucks on the road in the year 2007; the engines of these burn over a billion cubic meters (260 billion US gallons) of petrol/gasoline and diesel fuel yearly! The numbers are increasing rapidly, especially in China and India.
